With a background in fashion it comes as no surprise that Decorno designer Jessie Yoon, co-founder of Casa Nolita, takes an artful approach to interior design. Based in New York City, Jessie is originally from South Korea and infuses her signature style with global influence that feels curated and inspired. Specializing in residential design, she originally moved to New York to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology where she worked with a number of influential designers, eventually launching her own fashion label. Needing a space for a fashion show, Jessie staged a loft, and it was then that she discovered her talent and passion for interior design. After seven years in the fashion industry, Jessie took a leap of faith and dove straight into the tactile world of interior design and has never looked back.

Getting to Know Jessie Yoon

My name is Jessie Yoon, co-founder & interior designer of Casa Nolita.

How would you describe your style?

Jessie Yoon design aesthetic is diverse and juxtaposed, which might resemble NYC. I have lived in some of the best cities in the world including Seoul, Paris, London, and New York. By traveling around the world, I have been constantly inspired by different cultures and designs and I love to mix them up and incorporate them into my work. So you can find touches of European and Asian styles from my designs.

The Creative Process

To be honest, my creative process is not too creative. Through my design process, I try to figure out how to solve problems and issues rather than to create something new. There seems to be always some types of issues and conditions that I have to work with such as tight budgets, weird layouts, tiny spaces, items out of stock, or kids and pet friendly etc. So I initially create mood boards with the vibes and styles my clients or I want, then adjust the designs and come up with alternatives to make things work in the particular situations. I guess those limitations and conditions force me to think outside the box and to be creative. When everything is finally in the right place and properly functions, that is when I will finish up the space with a beautiful vase as the last touch.

Underrated Element of Home Décor

I would say a vase. Vases are not just to put flowers and branches. They can be amazing sculptural objects. Many people do not own nice vases and think vases are unnecessary, but I think vases are one of the best decorative items to instantly elevate the room and every space should have one.

Tips for Refreshing a Space

The first thing to do is cleaning up the space and getting rid of furniture and decorative items that they really do not need to keep anymore. Then draw different layouts that could work for their space and rearrange the furniture placements. Then they should check if the entire space is in balance and the traffic flow is good. By reorganizing and rearranging things they already have, the space can look completely different and refreshing without opening their wallets.
